IN THIS LESSON
Japan’s Global Contributions to Disaster Relief
Japan’s extensive research and dedication to its disaster relief program have provided multiple nations with recovery and benefits in response to disasters. Throughout the history of the JDR law, numerous nations have reaped the benefits of the advanced program, by Japan sharing its technological advancements, educational programs, and policy frameworks.
Ecuador: Early-Warning Systems for Volcanic Eruptions
in 2006, we saw our first example of how Japan’s technological advancements in disaster prevention could save millions of lives. Located in Ecudaor, the Japanese government provided the nation with an early warning seismic measuring system for the Tungurahua volcano. Due to the equipment being able to detect volcanic activity, the Ecuadorian government was able to set timely evacuation notices in preparation for an eruption. As a result of this, 4,00 residents were safely relocated before the 2006 eruption occurred, preventing what could have been a devastating impact and hundreds of possible lives lost. This is a perfect example of Jaspan using its advanced technology to help a vulnerable population.
Bangladesh: High-Tech Radar and Multi-Purpose Shelters
Bangladesh is a nation that has heavily benefited from Japan’s disaster relief program in a multitude of ways. Bangladesh suffers from cyclones and floods every year and has used Japan’s advanced meteorological reader systems to help mitigate these impacts and predict future storms. To add to this, Japan also funded the construction of multi-purpose shelters, that serve as a safe place for individuals to stay, during a cyclone or flood. The shelters are also used as community centers during non-disaster periods, providing a place of education, meetings, and events for local individuals. These resources provided by Japan, have helped increase safety and preparation in Bangladesh for disasters that have been affecting their communities for decades.
El Salvador: Disaster Education Saves Lives
In preparation for future disasters, experts on the JDR teams educated citizens of El Salvador on how to respond to and mitigate natural disasters. JDR teams trained the residents on strategies including hazard awareness and evacuation plans. These lessons helped the community when disaster struck in 2009, as a result of Hurricane Ida. As a result of the training, individuals were able to successfully mitigate the impacts, and help reduce fatalities from the much higher predicted count. Showcasing how fostering a culture of preparation and implementing the value of education can help nations endure tragic events.
Indonesia: Earthquake-Resistant Housing
Indonesia falls within the region of the “Pacific Ring of Fire”. A region that is known for its high seismic and volcanic activity. Home to about 75% of the world’s active volcanoes and constant earthquakes due to the interactions of the tectonic plates. To help with this, Japan shared its concept of earthquake-resistant designed housing with Indonesia. This housing was built to withstand seismic activity while being affordable and suited for local conditions. Thus, Indonesian communities now have housing to help prevent the disastrous effects of consistent earthquakes, providing a safe environment for families.
Japan’s natural disaster relief goes much further than technological advancements and financial aid. By providing countries with new resources, early warning systems, disaster-related infrastructure, and training programs, Japan continues to grow its global leadership. Japan has helped save many vulnerable communities within other nations and continues to increase global safety by sharing the benefits of the JDR program.
